Create a key with PuTTYgen
- Open PuTTYgen (installed with PuTTY).
- Choose EdDSA (Ed25519) or RSA 4096 and click Generate, moving the mouse until it completes.
- Enter a Key passphrase.
- Click Save private key to save a .ppk file.
- Copy all the text in the Public key for pasting into OpenSSH authorized_keys file box.
Add it to cPanel
In cPanel, open SSH Access › Manage SSH Keys › Import Key, paste the public key, import it, then click Manage and Authorize.
Connect with PuTTY
- Host Name: your server hostname; Port: 9284.
- Go to Connection › SSH › Auth › Credentials and browse to your .ppk file.
- Back on Session, save the settings and click Open. Log in with your cPanel username.
Pageant and FileZilla
Run Pageant (comes with PuTTY), right-click its tray icon, choose Add Key and enter your passphrase once. FileZilla and PuTTY will then use the key automatically: in FileZilla, connect with SFTP, your server hostname, port 9284 and your cPanel username.
